Our Story

Layside owners Kevin and Sophie began their love affair with the area when they had their first date at Chester’s Roman Fort, and they’ve been regulars in the area ever since.  “We both love it here,” explained Sophie. “I’m originally from London. I came up to university in Newcastle and then got a job at the airport, where I met Kevin and that was it! We were both explorers at heart and we have travelled all over the world but our hearts are definitely in Northumberland.

“We have always loved this part of Northumberland, and spent much of our free time exploring and walking along Hadrian’s Wall with our first black Labrador Archibald. Following many years working at Newcastle Airport, we found ourselves with the opportunity to purchase Layside Farm, and following on from the renovation of the farmhouse we embarked on our next journey together – to build an environmentally sympathetic B&B which could provide luxurious accommodation to those wishing to explore the area.

We took our time to research the area and canvas opinion as to what would make the ideal rural retreat; following suggestions of hot tubs, climbing walls and a nine hole golf course, we decided to stay true to our hearts and combine our love of the great outdoors with comfort, privacy and a hint of luxury. The result is Layside B&B where guests can enjoy this amazing and magical part of Northumberland.”

Kevin adds: “We have been amazed by the positive responses we have had from our guests, and have loved meeting so many people from both the local area and from around the world who have chosen to stay at Layside. The past year has certainly had its challenges with COVID-19, but the nature of what we have created at Layside lends itself well to the new concepts of social distancing, and we look forward to seeing many more people exploring the wonderful landscape and history that we are fortunate enough to have on our doorstep.”

What Our Guests Had to Say…

Wow, what a setting to wake up in. Peaceful, quiet and just breathtaking. Can’t recommend this enough. A brilliant way to stop, recharge and get some fresh air. The food, both evening meal and breakfast was restaurant quality. We will be visiting again later in the year.

As always, excellent hosts and brilliant facilities. Breakfast options great.

Excellent location for Hadrian’s Wall and Hexham. Very clean room with the only downside of no internet – but this means a more relaxed stay. Excellent food both for breakfast and dinner. Well worth visiting.

The most lovely location with a fabulous breakfast – can’t wait to return!

A very nice place to stay. Great hosts and food brought to your door. The location was perfect too. All around value for money – nothing negative to say – highly recommend . I would certainly go back again.

We had a lovely stay at Layside. Our room had a view of Sycamore gap which was amazing. We would recommend eating at Layside. The owners prepared a great meal for us at short notice.

A great place with really nice facilities and lovely big windows so you can watch the wildlife from your bed! Kevin was a top host and the breakfasts were ace!

Although we only stayed one night in this lovely tranquil place with an outstanding view, we would definitely recommend a break here probably all year round.

The welcoming hosts and lovely evening meal and breakfast delivered to our door was superb. Thank you.

The accommodation was located in a beautiful area and we took pleasure in watching the pheasants roaming first thing in the morning.

The food is second to none. We are seasoned travellers and both breakfast and evening meals were of the highest standard.

Just perfect – everything about our stay was impeccable – particularly the wonderful food, the comfortable room, the pheasants which came into the garden every morning and the tiny extra touches. Just brilliant and I hope that we can come back again soon. Thank you.

We stayed 1 night at Layside as a treat for my partner’s birthday. We had a fantastic time, the room was amazing and immaculately clean. The hosts were very welcoming, greeting us on arrival and showing us our room. There are plenty of options for breakfast which was delivered at a time that suited us – the food was delicious and fresh. The views were incredible and the location is so quiet and peaceful.
Our only regret is not staying more nights!! can’t wait to go back in the summer 🙂
We had a really lovely short break. The accommodation was perfect, the food exceptional and the standard of service excellent! we hope to come back again soon!
What can I say? A beautiful, calm, private location. An amazing room with a view, with everything you need for a perfect stay – super comfy bed, loads of space, a place to sit, fluffy towels, brilliant shower, lovely toiletries, parking right outside your door – and I really do wish my own house was as warm, just toasty. And the food, well…I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy a better breakfast. Loads of choice, even for a vegetarian like me. Hearty portion size, enjoyed at your leisure in your room with a view. Evening meals were fantastic value for money, again, hearty home-cooking, and just delicious. Kevin and Sophie are just perfect hosts.
Impeccable service, amazing experience – setting the standard for accommodation in the area – we will return!
Perfect couple of days away (complete chill out). Set in beautiful countryside with amazing views of the sycamore Gap. Its the little extra touches that make it even more special, exquisite toiletries and one of the most comfy beds ever!! The room is really clean. Breakfast was delicious and the evening meals all delivered to your door were great after a day out in the fresh air .Nothing was too much trouble for Kevin and Sophie .
Thank you for an incredible stay. We loved the tranquility and privacy of Layside but really appreciated the friendly welcome and fantastic food! I’m not sure I have ever slept in a more comfortable bed! Really liked the Bath House products and powerful shower.

A highlight was watching the birds on the feeders – they certainly got through a lot of seed!

I loved my “vegan surprise” dinner – shepherdess pie is right up my street and Martin wolfed down his ragu in seconds! Avocado is absolutely the way to any self respecting vegans heart so the breakfast bagel was perfection! Must get your smoothie recipe when we next visit.

Loved my stay with you! You have a very special B&B business! I hope to be able to get many more bookings in!

We were looking for a peaceful hideaway in nature and that’s exactly what we got. Comfortable accommodation, delicious evening meal and breakfast, all delivered to the room. We honestly could not have been looked after better by our friendly hosts. It was just the soul food we needed.

We had a lovely, relaxing stay, the room and location were beautiful. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent. It can be a bit daunting taking our young dog away with us but he was made very welcome. Thank you!

Back from our two night stay at Layside. From beginning to end our stay was 5 star!
Great location, super friendly hosts and the breakfast/evening meal absolutely delicious!
We will be back and will also recommend to family and friends.

We thoroughly enjoyed our night and wished we could have stayed longer. It is very peaceful and cosy. We loved the decor (which was very much to our taste) and the bed was extremely comfortable. A delicious breakfast as well.

We really enjoyed our stay at Layside. The room was lovely – cosy, well equipped and with comfy beds. The food was absolutely delicious (we had breakfast and dinner) and the hosts very friendly and helpful. The location is great for walks along Hadrian’s wall and around Northumberland. We would highly recommend to others.
