Hadrian's Wall

APERTURA

The temporary public artwork installed on Hadrian’s Wall as part of the 1900 festival will remain in place for another two weeks. It had been due to be dismantled on October 2nd, but will now remain in place at the beautiful Walltown Country Park until Sunday October 16th – well worth a visit.

The sonic sculpture is made up of 1900 suspended copper wind chimes which make music that constantly changes depending on the weather. The artwork was created by Ed Carter, Nicky Kirk and Tony Broomhead and highlights a visual fissure in the landscape – a missing section of Hadrian’s Wall, which was lost during the whinstone quarrying that continued until the 1970s. Once dismantled, the chimes will be given out to local schools and community groups as a memento of the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 festival legacy, with 2022 marking 1900 years since the construction of the Wall.
